What is Rainwater Harvesting?

Rain Water Harvesting is the concept of catching and storing the rain water for either drinking or non potable purpose. Contrary to belief it is one of the cheapest and sustainable form of activity that could be done in a building, whether its 100 years old, or a new construction.


Why do you need Rainwater Harvesting?

Rapid urbanization is not a unknown phenomenon. Due to which quite a lot of stress is created on various resource such as water. The simplest reason been  is that we are consuming more ground that what is recharged. There are several reasons for this to happen:

1. Huge Population over limited parcel of land.

2. Concreting of the surfaces, due to which water has stopped getting percolated to the underground water table.

3. Fragmented constructions of buildings, which leads to difference in the road / ground levels due to which the entire water goes wasted.

We just follow what nature does, that is to keep it simple.

So rather than having a huge harvesting.Ground water recharging pits, we just create a smaller decentralized pit, so that the rainwater gets recharged to that very location itself where it is falling. This prevents many of the costing, maintenance and other implication that is otherwise associated with rainwater harvesting.

Is the stored rainwater in storage tanks fit for cooking and drinking?
Although the rainwater collected in the storage tank clean and fresh water but it is at risk of contamination from the surface of the storage tank or the catchment area by dust, leaves etc. However, even if some dust or leaves go into the sump, they do not cause any harm as long as the water is boiled before consumption. Various filters can be utilised to remove such suspended pollutants from the rainwater collected to make it safer for consumption.
What are the places where Rainwater Harvesting can be implemented?
Rainwater Harvesting primarily requires catchment area in the form of a roof or open space to capture the rain and can be done in homes, apartments, societies, schools, institutions, commercial premises and any other space as long as there is enough space to create a catchment area.
Can Rainwater Harvesting be done for new buildings only?
Rainwater Harvesting can be done for both new and old buildings. For existing buildings, rainwater harvesting can be done by modifying the existing plumbing and making additions, if necessary.
What are the workings of a rainwater harvesting plant?
Working of rain water harvesting is simplistic scale down of water nature does to recharge ground water table and storage as well for further use.The first step in a Rainwater Harvesting structure is collection of rainwater in a pit/chamber and allow it to settle and de-silt. Second step is to collect this water in a storage tank, which could be fabricated in brick and mortar or tanks of your choice. Third step is the take the overflow pipe of this storage structured to an pit where the rainwater simply percolates and recharges the groundwater table.
What is the difference between rain water harvesting and storing of rainwater?
Storage of Rainwater is the part of the Rain water Harvesting itself. Rain Water Harvesting constitute of two components. First is the collection, which could be through roof or surface run off etc. Once this water is collected and if it is stored for further usage then it would be called as "Rainwater Harvesting". This water been recharged back to the ground post collection without further storage and for further usage then it would have been called Ground Water Table Recharging.
